Charles X Gustav, the Swedish king who took Malmö from Denmark in 1658 and started the forced, violent "Swedefization" of the city and its inhabitants. The statue was put on Malmö's largest square in 1896, in his "honour". It's a very controversial statue - but most people don't care anymore (or even know the history behind it);

The square itself, Stortorget (the Big Square), dates back to 1536.

Calgary has a few. We have even more statues of just horses though...

Boer War Memorial - sits at the center of Central Memorial Park

"Roundup" - sits outside the Roundup Centre at the Calgary Stampede grounds

© Linda Stewart

Not sure what the name of this one is - also at the Stampede grounds

Cochrane Ranchehouse Statue - in the Town of Cochrane, a satellite town of Calgary

I'm going to have to go down to the Capitol for some "guys on horses" photos. I have to confess, I haven't even set foot in our Capitol in several years, partially no thanks to the security around the place being stepped up. It's just kind of turned me off to it. I had nice memories of going down there as a kid without a care in the world, and now I see all that and it sort of takes away the joy.

a lil more Infos: He was born 1771 and died 1851. He was on the throne from 1837-1851. The statue was erected 1861, only 10 years after his death.

Our heros are a little different in Las Vegas.

Sculptor: Deborah Copenhaver

Benny Binion began his career moonshining and was convicted for it. He opened up a numbers game which was also illegal. He was convicted of murder in 1931 after killing Frank Bolding. He got a two year suspended sentence and then killed a fellow numbers operator who drew a gun on him. In 1946 Benny moved to Las Vegas and became a partner in a casino. He opened his own casino in 1951, the Eldorado Club. He was the first to replace saw-dust covered casino floors with carpet (WOW!). He served time in Leavenworth Penitentiary from 1953-1957 for tax evasion. In 1970 Binion started the World Series of Poker.

Statue of Jeanne d'Arc on Place du Martroi in Orléans, France

and this one in my hometown, Montréal. On Dorchester Square. Dedicated to Montrealers who fought alongside the British during the Boers war.

Before posting in this thread I did a quick Google search to see if I could find any statues of guys on horses in Phoenix, Arizona, which would of course invalidate the premise of the thread. If anyone is able to find one there or in a similar municipality, then I retract my post.

That said, New York:

And I'll throw in Chicago...

And there's even a New York Times article from when it was unveiled...

Then there are the twin Indian statues flanking Congress in Grant Park:

And the most famous equestrian statue is probably the Quadriga atop the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin:

I'm not sure exactly what this statement means...but it sounds like a very arrogant way of saying that Phoenix is not a great city, in your opinion. Did you look through the thread? Undoubtedly there are some other cities represented here that you think unworthy as well.

That said, Phoenix:

Philadelphia has it's fair share of statue with guys on horses. I'm sure one of the shutterbugs on here have pictures of them all.

Nashville

Andrew Jackson, seemingly the most popular "guy on a horse" statue...on display in several cities across the U.S.

I guess I might as well add this one in...

Sendai has a statue of Date Masamune, the founder of that city and the most powerful daimyo of that area at the time.

In Brooklyn - George Washington

In Kansas City
(photo's not by me)

The Scout (generic Sioux Indian)

The statue was the namesake of KC's NHL team:

JC Nichols Fountain

Four equestrian fugues which are said to represent four rivers: the Mississippi River (the one with the Indian riding the horse and beating off an alligator), the Volga River (with the bear), the Seine and the Rhine.
